Kathy Hulme:
Inspired by swimming, people, nature and the landscape Kathy uses a variety of media and styles to create works on board and paper. From abstract, experimental pieces to figurative work Kathy's style is underpinned by strong drawing skills honed at Edinburgh College of art in the 80s.
Kathy's lido paintings catch the swimmer unawares, negotiating the alien medium of water. Each swimmer's relationship with the water demands unique approaches and techniques. Sometimes the paint is thinly applied to capture light patterns, at other times thicker impasto strokes show the movement of the water and swimmer.
Her loose abstract works are an ongoing conversation with the landscape and natural forms. Gesture, accident and unforeseen intensities create works that echo the rhythms and textures of landscape without depicting them literally.
Kathy is an Alexander Technique Teacher and trainee Shaw method swimming teacher.
